What Is Local SEO?

Google scans its index when someone performs a search in order to provide the best results. Local SEO differs from conventional SEO in that Google uses a distinct set of ranking factors to rank local search results. Local SEO has a number of unique ranking signals, including:

It is true that the Local Pack has greater impact on certain businesses and industries than on others, but it is valuable to any business seeking to strengthen their visibility and engage with a local audience. Local Packs appear at the top of the first SERP, offering local businesses a boost in online visibility as well as a shortcut to the top of the SERP listings that you might not otherwise achieve through SEO.

The Local Pack also allows search users to locate your business' website, hours, address, and telephone number. In order to target click-to-call referrals through Google, the Local Pack is an important referral channel to target.

In the case of restaurants, HVAC contractors, plumbers, electricians, coffee shops, dentists, local retail shops, or any business with a brick-and-mortar presence, Google's Local Pack can be an asset, offering a number of features that benefit both search users and local businesses.

To be included in Google's Local Pack, there is no additional work required. As these search results are generated based upon information in Google's business listings, if your business has already been added to this database or you have set up a business account, you should be eligible to appear in the Local Pack.

If you have not yet claimed your Google My Business listing, please visit the Google My Business website and complete the steps to claim ownership. The best thing you can do when you own a Google My Business listing is to make sure your profile is optimized for maximum visibility. You can improve your chances of appearing in the Local Pack by following these tips:

  • Please provide as much information about your business as possible. In general, the more complete your business profile is, the more likely Google's algorithm will favor you. Please ensure that your business information is accurate and up-to-date, including your physical address, your business category, and other key aspects of your business. Google uses this information to determine whether your business is relevant to a particular search.
  • Please verify your location. To ensure the accuracy of location information, Google offers a verification process. You will be impacted not only by your Local Pack results, but also by your organic search ranking and your visibility on Google Maps. Check your Google My Business page to verify your status and to complete the process, if necessary.
  • You should add photos to your business listing. Search users use images of storefronts, interiors, menus, and other elements of business locations to decide whether they would like to visit the business. Provide these photos in order to enhance the information available about your business through the Local Pack.
  • Information should be updated as it changes. Be sure to update your profile if you extend or change your working hours. Google allows business owners to verify their holiday hours, which can boost their visibility during official holidays by providing more reliable results in the Local Pack.
  • Engage with your customers by responding to online reviews. Businesses that respond to customer reviews are deemed valuable by Google's algorithm, and the company claims that this can lead to higher visibility.

NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number. Ideally, the NAP for your business should be correct and consistent when optimizing your website and online presence for local search. This is because Google values accurate information for its users.

Having the correct NAP for all your listings throughout the internet is crucial for local SEO. All of these listings are scanned by Google when searching for information about your business. The data is stored and used to determine ranking. Incorrect NAP citations can result in confusion among customers and a poor user experience.

  1. Ensure that this critical information is prominently displayed on your website so that it can be read by your customers as well as Google. Be sure the information is text and not an image so that Google can scan it.
  2. Claim your Google My Business listing and ensure that your NAP information is accurate.
  3. Google can be used to identify potentially incorrect listings. To search specific directories, you can use Google site operators, such as site:yelp.com "my business", or you can search by your phone number, address, or business name.
  4. Make a record of all your listings so that you can easily update them if your business' number or address changes.
