The Challenge
Dress to Sweat was a high-energy fitness apparel brand that had outgrown its initial web setup. In 2010, selling apparel online meant dealing with the “Matrix Problem” – every shirt or pair of leggings had multiple sizes and colors, creating a massive web of SKUs. They needed a platform that could handle complex product attributes, tiered pricing, and advanced inventory management. Magento was the clear choice, but the path from their legacy system to a live Magento store was a massive technical undertaking.
The WebCitz Solution
For three years, WebCitz acted as the lead engineering and consulting team for this digital transformation:
- Magento Architecture Planning: We spent significant time mapping out the data architecture. This involved organizing hundreds of fitness products into a logical hierarchy of “Configurable Products,” ensuring that when a customer selected a size and color, the inventory was tracked accurately on the backend.
- Complex Data Migration: Moving an active store is like performing surgery on a moving vehicle. We managed the extraction and cleaning of customer data, order history, and product catalogs from their legacy environment to prepare it for the Magento import.
- Custom E-commerce Buildout: We worked on the “buildout” phase of the store, focusing on a UI/UX that would cater to the fitness community – prioritizing mobile-friendliness (even in the early 2010s) and high-quality imagery to showcase the “sweat-ready” fabrics.
- Strategic Consulting: Throughout the three-year relationship, we provided guidance on e-commerce best practices, from payment gateway integrations to shipping logic specifically tailored for the apparel industry.
- Platform Management: We provided the technical oversight necessary to keep the project moving forward, managing the various extensions and custom code required to make Magento perform to the client’s specifications.
The Result
The relationship with Dress to Sweat represents a deep-dive into the “foundational” years of modern e-commerce. By managing their buildout and migration path for three years, WebCitz provided the professional engineering required to handle the complexities of the apparel market. While the project concluded in 2013, our work ensured the brand had a sophisticated data structure and a professional roadmap for their digital future.
