The Challenge
In the competitive outdoor recreation market of the Pacific Northwest, a sailing club needs to convey two things: adventure and safety. Their challenges included:
- Platform Obsolescence: Their original Joomla site was difficult for the staff to update and didn’t reflect the premium nature of their Sail Canada and ASA certified courses.
- Low Local Visibility: They were competing with established marinas and yacht clubs. They needed to rank for specific terms like “sailing lessons Vancouver” and “learn to sail BC.”
- Content Gap: The site lacked the “educational authority” that search engines reward – they needed deep, unique content about sailing theory, local routes, and certification paths.
The WebCitz Solution
We executed a multi-year digital transformation that prioritized search authority and user engagement:
- The 2016 WordPress Redesign: We migrated the club from Joomla to a custom-themed WordPress environment. The new design featured stunning maritime imagery, mobile-responsive course calendars, and a streamlined registration flow. This move made the site much more accessible to students browsing on phones at the docks.
- Authority Building & Backlinks: We didn’t just wait for people to find the site. We performed targeted marketing sprints to build high-quality backlinks within the global sailing and travel communities. By getting the club mentioned on authoritative maritime blogs and directories, we boosted their domain authority significantly.
- Hyper-Local SEO & GBP Management: We meticulously managed their Google Business Profile and local citations. This ensured that when people in Vancouver or Richmond searched for a sailing school, the club appeared prominently in the “Map Pack” with accurate hours and reviews.
- Content Strategy: Our team wrote unique, high-quality content for the site. This included detailed breakdowns of Sail Canada standards, guides to sailing in the Pacific Northwest, and “What to Wear” resources for new students. This “help-first” content turned the site into a resource, not just a storefront.
- Social Media Refresh: We helped the club “freshen up” their social channels, moving from stagnant pages to active communities that showcased student successes and beautiful sunset sails.
- Managed Hosting Stewardship: Throughout the entire relationship, we provided secure, fast, and reliable hosting. We ensured the site could handle the seasonal traffic surges when everyone in BC decided it was time to get on the water.
The Result
For nearly a decade, the Vancouver Sailing Club enjoyed a dominant digital position. The 2016 redesign and our ongoing marketing efforts allowed them to compete at a high level, filling their classes year-round and establishing them as a premier Sail Canada training center. While the club eventually reached the end of its journey and shut down a few years ago, the technical and marketing infrastructure we provided helped them successfully navigate the waters of the digital age for over ten years.
