The Challenge
Grain Sight provides farmers with critical, real-time insights into their grain inventory. The technical requirements are immense:
- Hardware-to-Software Integration: The system must pull live data from physical sensors located in grain silos across various farming operations.
- Complex Data Processing: Large volumes of raw data must be processed and stored in a way that provides actionable metrics (moisture levels, temperature, volume) to the end user.
- Legacy Debt: The original system was built in Joomla with a PHP application that, over a decade, became difficult to scale and maintain.
- Mission-Critical Reliability: For a farming operation, knowing the status of their grain is vital to preventing spoilage and optimizing sales; the application cannot afford downtime.
The WebCitz Solution
We have acted as the primary architects for both the preservation and the future-proofing of the Grain Sight platform:
- Long-Term PHP Stewardship (2015–2023): For nearly a decade, we maintained the highly complex legacy PHP codebase. We ensured the data pipelines remained open and the customer control panel stayed functional, even as the underlying technologies evolved.
- Full Platform Redevelopment (2024): We are currently in the final stages of a massive digital transformation for the brand. This involves:
- WordPress Migration: Moving the front-facing marketing site and user portal into WordPress for better content management and security.
- Complete PHP Refactoring: We have completely refactored and modernized the core PHP application. This “ground-up” rewrite uses modern coding standards to improve performance, security, and scalability.
- Enhanced Data Visualization: The new application features a more intuitive control panel, making it easier for farmers to interpret silo metrics at a glance.
- Custom Control Panel Engineering: We built a secure, tiered-access portal where customers can log in to view their specific farming data. This required advanced database architecture to ensure data privacy and real-time accuracy.
- API & Data Pipeline Management: We managed the complex logic required to ingest data from silo hardware and translate it into user-friendly metrics on the dashboard.
