WebCitz started working with this client in 2021
- Client: Northwest Timber
- Platform: WooCommerce
- Industry: Manufacturing / Industrial
- Services: Ecommerce, Maintenance / Support, Web Hosting
The Challenge
Northwest Timber deals in high-value, unique pieces of wood where grain pattern and figure are everything. Their digital hurdles were significant:
- Platform Obsolescence: Magento 1.x had reached end-of-life, leaving their store vulnerable and technologically stagnant.
- Unique Inventory Logic: Unlike standard retail, many of their products are unique sets. The platform needed to mirror their specific way of handling “one-off” categories and order fulfillment.
- Facet Crawl Attacks: Because of their extensive filtering system, they became a target for aggressive bots that would crawl thousands of “facet” pages (filtered results), overwhelming server resources and threatening site stability.
- User Experience: Professional luthiers need to filter by very specific attributes – density, figure type, and dimensions – requiring a robust but fast filtering engine.
The WebCitz Solution
We guided Northwest Timber through a strategic platform selection and a “ground-up” rebuild:
- Strategic Platform Consultation: We analyzed Shopify, Magento 2.x, and WooCommerce. We ultimately recommended WooCommerce because its flexibility allowed us to replicate their complex Magento workflows and fulfillment logic more naturally than the rigid structures of Shopify or the high overhead of Magento 2.
- Custom WooCommerce Theme Build: We rejected third-party templates in favor of a completely custom build. This ensured the site was lean, fast, and specifically architected to showcase high-resolution timber photography.
- Massive Catalog Migration: We successfully migrated their vast historical catalog from Magento to WooCommerce. This included preserving complex product attributes and ensuring that the “one-of-a-kind” product logic remained intact during the transition.
- Security & Bot Mitigation: To solve the facet crawling issue, we implemented advanced bot mitigation strategies. By fine-tuning server-side rules and crawl budget management, we prevented malicious or excessive bot activity from impacting site performance.
- Enterprise-Grade Hosting: We set up a robust, optimized hosting environment designed to handle large image libraries and complex database queries, ensuring that the filtered “search for the perfect wood” remained lightning-fast for their customers.
The Result
By moving to a custom WooCommerce platform, Northwest Timber successfully modernized its digital operations without losing the specialized functionality that its business depends on. The site is now faster, more secure, and significantly easier for their team to manage. Our ongoing work to mitigate bot attacks has ensured that their server resources remain dedicated to genuine customers, preserving the high-end experience expected by the global woodworking community.
