Faced with the challenge of retaining divers beyond certification, Honolulu Dive Club set out to create a dynamic online community and streamline its membership offerings. By launching a custom Joomla portal, they transformed their operations and became the go-to hub for social diving in Honolulu.
The Challenge
In 2009, dive shops often relied on physical storefronts and foot traffic. Honolulu Dive Club wanted to leverage the growing “social web” to:
- Automate Complex Memberships: Managing different tracks for beginners, advanced students, and professional instructor candidates.
- Foster Long-Term Retention: Moving beyond “one-off” certifications by creating a space where students felt like part of an ongoing community.
- Local Market Domination: Capturing the high volume of local and visiting divers searching for specialized instruction in the Honolulu area.
The WebCitz Solution
We engineered a “Digital Clubhouse” using the flexibility of the Joomla CMS:
- Joomla Website Launch (2009): We developed a feature-rich Joomla site that served as the primary portal for all dive operations. The platform allowed for easy content updates, including dive schedules, location spotlights, and instructor bios.
- Tiered Membership Packages: We built out a custom membership system to handle their various offerings. This included:
- Student Tracks: Streamlined sign-ups for Open Water and Advanced courses.
- Instructor Development: Specialized portals for aspiring pros pursuing divemaster or instructor ratings.
- Social Memberships: Packages designed for local divers looking for consistent boat access and social events.
- Custom Message Board & Forum: We integrated a robust message board where “alumni” and current students could interact. This became a vital resource for gear tips, dive site reviews, and finding “dive buddies” for weekend trips.
- Meetup Group Integration: We helped the club build and leverage a Meetup presence. By syncing their website activities with local Meetup events, we drove significant new-user growth and established the club as one of the most active social diving groups in Hawaii.
- Course Resource Hub: The site functioned as a repository for educational materials and course prerequisites, allowing students to prepare for their practical sessions in the water from the comfort of home.
The Result
By 2010, Honolulu Dive Club had successfully built a “sticky” digital community that kept divers coming back long after their initial certification. The combination of a functional membership site and an active social forum created a powerful network effect, making it the premier social diving organization in the Honolulu area.
