Owlvericks Coffee faced critical technical setbacks that jeopardized both their online sales and security. Through a comprehensive stabilization and PHP 8 upgrade, their e-commerce site was transformed from error-ridden and outdated to reliable and ready for growth.
The Challenge
Owlvericks faced several critical “blocker” issues that threatened their online sales and security. The site was in a state of “version lag,” where outdated software was clashing with modern server requirements. Key hurdles included:
- Fatal Shop Errors: The primary “Shop” page was throwing fatal errors, effectively shutting down the ability for customers to browse or purchase coffee.
- PHP Obsolescence: The site was running on an outdated version of PHP, making it vulnerable to security threats and incompatible with modern WordPress updates.
- Software Bloat: The installation was cluttered with unnecessary themes and conflicting plugins that were dragging down performance.
- Visual Inconsistencies: Legacy design elements, such as a “seafoam” gradient in the header, no longer aligned with the brand’s premium aesthetic.
The WebCitz Solution
We implemented a “Stability-First” roadmap, using a structured development environment and a task-tracking spreadsheet to ensure every technical leak was plugged:
- Development Environment (Staging): Before making any live changes, we created a full Dev Site. This allowed us to troubleshoot fatal errors and test major updates without interrupting the client’s ability to take orders.
- PHP 8 Infrastructure Upgrade: We migrated the site environment to PHP 8. This was a critical step for both security and speed, ensuring the site could handle the latest WordPress and WooCommerce core features.
- WooCommerce & WordPress Recovery: We performed a systematic update of the WordPress core and the WooCommerce engine. This resolved the fatal errors on the shop page and restored a stable checkout funnel.
- Plugin Auditing & Conflict Resolution: We identified and deactivated problematic plugins, such as “PHP Compatibility Checker” and “Dropbox Backup and Restore,” which were causing conflicts in the new environment.
- Site “Decluttering”: To improve security and server performance, we removed all but one of the default WordPress themes. This reduces the “attack surface” of the site and keeps the file structure clean.
- Front-End Refinement: We began aesthetic cleanup by removing legacy design elements, such as the outdated seafoam header gradient, to move toward a more modern and cohesive brand look.
- Infrastructure Assessment: We identified that the site lacked a Child Theme, which informed our strategy to avoid theme updates that might overwrite custom styling, preserving the site’s unique look while we focused on backend stability.
