Aiming to modernize boat and jet ski rentals, Orbital Rentals needed a system as dynamic as their fleet and as flexible as their customers’ vacation plans. The Challenge
Renting out boats and jet skis is significantly more complex than standard e-commerce. For Orbital Rentals, the primary hurdles included:
- Time-Sensitive Availability: Unlike a t-shirt, a boat can’t be sold twice at the same time. The site needed a “real-time” brain to track which units were reserved for specific days or weeks.
- Complex Fleet Management: With a diverse inventory ranging from powerboats to paddleboats, the system had to handle different pricing tiers, security deposits, and rental durations.
- Geographic Logistics: Serving a 30-mile radius around Crivitz meant the system needed to communicate clear expectations regarding delivery or pickup locations during the checkout process.
- Vacation Planning UX: Customers often plan their Crivitz vacations months in advance. The interface needed to be intuitive enough for a user to book their entire “water fleet” for a specific week in July with total confidence.
The WebCitz Solution
Because standard Joomla extensions at the time couldn’t handle the specific logic Orbital Rentals required, we engineered a custom-coded reservation extension from the ground up:
- Custom Joomla Extension Development: We developed a bespoke PHP/MySQL application that integrated seamlessly into the Joomla CMS. This wasn’t a “plugin” with limited features – it was a purpose-built engine designed for the rental industry.
- Dynamic Calendar & Cart Logic: We built a sophisticated scheduling system that allowed users to select their vacation dates and see real-time availability. If a jet ski was booked for the second week of August, the system automatically pulled it from the “shelf” for those specific dates while keeping it available for the rest of the summer.
- Multi-Item Reservation Flow: We engineered the checkout process to handle multiple equipment types in a single transaction. A user could add a pontoon boat, two kayaks, and a paddleboat to their cart, with the system calculating the total for the specific duration of their stay.
- Secure Reservation Management: The backend provided the owners of Orbital Rentals with a clear “Flight Board” of upcoming rentals, allowing them to manage logistics, prep the equipment, and coordinate deliveries within their 30-mile service radius.
- Robust Database Architecture: We ensured that the data handling was airtight, preventing “double-bookings” and ensuring that pricing rules (daily vs. weekly rates) were applied automatically and accurately.
The Result
The custom solution transformed Orbital Rentals into a 24/7 reservation desk. By allowing vacationers to book their equipment online months in advance, the company was able to secure revenue earlier in the season and plan their logistics with much higher precision.
