WebCitz started working with this client in 2020
- Client: Chris's Stuff
- Platform: Shopify
- Industry: Retail / E-Commerce
- Services: Digital Marketing, Ecommerce, Maintenance / Support
The Challenge
Chris’s Stuff, a prominent retailer and wholesaler of wine-themed gifts and accessories, was outgrowing their legacy Magento 1.x environment. The primary challenge was the sheer complexity of their business model. They required:
- Full Data Preservation: Migrating years of product data, customer accounts, order history, and valuable product reviews without loss.
- Hybrid B2B/B2C Pricing: A system that could handle tiered retail pricing alongside complex wholesale levels and bulk discount rules.
- Custom Registration Logic: A specialized onboarding process for wholesale customers that required more validation than Shopify’s native account creation allowed.
The WebCitz Solution
WebCitz engineered a custom-tailored migration and development strategy to bridge the gap between Magento’s flexibility and Shopify’s modern ecosystem:
- Precision Data Migration: We handled the comprehensive migration of all core business data. Unlike standard migrations, we ensured that order history, customer passwords/records, and product reviews were successfully mapped to the new Shopify architecture, maintaining continuity for their existing user base.
- Custom Laravel App Development: To solve the complex registration requirements, we built a standalone Laravel application. This app serves as a bridge, utilizing Shopify Webhooks to intercept and manipulate customer account settings during the registration process, ensuring only qualified wholesalers gained access to B2B pricing.
- Wholesale & Bulk Discount Engineering: We implemented a robust pricing structure within Shopify that allows the client to manage different pricing tiers. This included “Product Personalization” features and bulk-buy discounts, ensuring that both individual gift-shoppers and large-scale wholesale partners have a seamless experience.
- Advanced Personalization Features: We built out the technical infrastructure to support product personalization, allowing customers to customize their items – a critical feature for the gift industry that requires careful coordination between the front-end UI and the back-end order processing.
- Shopify Webhook Integration: By using hooks to trigger actions in our custom Laravel app, we automated the management of customer tags and account permissions, creating a “hands-off” workflow for the client’s administrative team.
The Result
The transition from Magento to Shopify was a transformative success for Chris’s Stuff. By building a custom Laravel-driven solution to handle their unique wholesale needs, WebCitz provided the client with the stability of Shopify without sacrificing the complex business logic they relied on in Magento. The result is a high-performance, scalable digital storefront that effectively serves two distinct audiences – retail and wholesale – on a single, unified platform.
