What is Involved in Maintaining a Shopify Website

We view Shopify web maintenance to be a reactive support service that provides you with the appropriate Shopify developer resources to solve nearly any ecommerce website problem. There are many examples of website issues that might require service from a Shopify maintenance agency, including:

  • Installing apps to add new functionality.
  • Adding new web pages as you release new products or services.
  • Writing new blog content to help you stay fresh.
  • Rearranging the navigation menu of your ecommerce website.
  • Improving page speed to help you pass Google Core Web Vitals.
  • Modifying the look and feel of your Shopify store's design.
  • Fixing site audit issues or Google Search Console coverage problems.
  • Improving technical SEO by improving structured data, open graph tags, etc.
  • Investigating the cause and providing a solution to any other Shopify issue.

The previously mentioned Shopify services are just a glimpse of what we view as possible Shopify web maintenance services. In fact, Shopify website maintenance is really anything a Shopify developer or internet marketer does to your website to change it in some manner.

Reactive Shopify Website Support

The reason we consider Shopify web maintenance to be a reactive service is that most online store owners wouldn't want a Shopify developer going into their website and changing things around without their knowledge. When you choose to have our Shopify agency maintain your website, we'll be your ecommerce support team on standby for any request.

Who Needs Shopify Support and Maintenance

At some point in time, every Shopify website on the internet will eventually require some form of website maintenance. The reason is simply that the internet is always changing. Not to worry though, our Shopify web maintenance cost isn't overly expensive so it should be affordable for you to maintain your Shopify store! Here are some common reasons why a Shopify store might require website maintenance services:

  • When the design framework for Shopify changes and you have to move into a newer theme framework.
  • When a Shopify store has become a victim of malware or some other form of malicious activity, the theme and apps will need to be reviewed for security exploits and cleaned of malware.
  • When the content on your website, which explains your company, products, or services becomes outdated and needs to be refreshed to help ensure future visitors receive accurate information about your operation. This type of Shopify web maintenance is critical to ensuring your website is benefiting you.

As you can see, there are several reasons a Shopify store may require maintenance above and beyond the obvious reasons of just wanting to update something on the website. It is important to understand the future needs of your Shopify storefront when planning budgets and schedules.

How We Perform Web Maintenance

We have an experienced web maintenance team who puts forth great effort to understand your maintenance needs, schedule your work in a timely fashion, and follow up with you after the tasks have been completed.

Most Shopify maintenance services start with an email from you, the Shopify store owner. That email is routed into our ticket system and automatically assigned to the project manager on your account. From there, any Shopify developer on our team can work on the ticket without delay, leading to faster turnaround time and simplified internal communication.

For requests that originate from phone or live chat, a similar process to handling your Shopify support services unfolds. The support request is entered into our ticket system by the person in the conversation with you, which allows the work order to be routed to the most appropriate Shopify web developer on our team.

We have 24x7 phone and live chat receptionists who will take down your request and create a support ticket to be handled in the order it was received, or according to your service level agreement.

Example Shopify Site Maintenance Service List

We are often asked for detailed examples of Shopify web maintenance requests that might come up after the launch of a Shopify store. Here are several examples of Shopify site maintenance services we've been asked to perform in the past and would be more than happy to provide to you!

Simple Shopify Website Changes

A simple change to your Shopify site might include updating a paragraph on a page, swapping out an image, or adding a new page. These are just normal, routine web maintenance tasks to keep content fresh for both search engines and visitors.

Page Speed Improvements

If your Shopify store isn't running as fast as it once was, we can review your Shopify theme, any installed Shopify apps, and any third-party tracking scripts to help determine the cause of the speed issues. We can even scan for console errors, broken links, unoptimized images, and much more!

App Installations

If your Shopify store needs additional functionality that isn't native to Shopify, we can help you find third-party apps that might exist. Alternatively, we do have Shopify developers who can create private Shopify apps for your specific project requirements.

Google Search Console Fixes

Did you get a report from Google Search Console telling you about a coverage issue on your Shopify site? If so, we can review the coverage issues, fix the problems, and update you on the results. This will help your search engine rankings by making Google happy!

Improve Structured Data

Have you ever noticed information like reviews or product prices in the listing of a Google organic search result? This is brought to you by structured data, which is a standardized way of describing the content on the web page, whether it be of a local business, ecommerce product or some other common data type.

Add Open Graph Tags

Adding Open Graph Tags to your Shopify store will help search engines better understand your page content and improve the appearance of your Shopify website in social media platforms when people share links to your online store.

Optimize Images

Are large images slowing down your Shopify store? No problem! We can run all your images through our image compression tools and even setup recurring image compression for newly added images in the future!

Setup Live Chat

Do you want to try live chat on your Shopify website? We can make recommendations on the best live chat systems for your store's requirements, install the chat code, and configure the design to match your online store's branding!

Add reCaptcha to Forms

If spambots are attacking your Shopify contact forms, we can setup a checkbox or invisible reCaptcha to help minimize unwanted submissions on your forms.

Create Theme Backups

Do you want to create a backup of your Shopify theme? We can help you create one-time or scheduled backups that store at an offsite location for future reference.

Create Development / Staging Sites

It is often recommended that you setup a development or staging website before proceeding with a major theme change. If you'd like help creating and managing that development / staging site, just let us know!

Setup A/B or Multivariate Testing

Do you prefer to make design changes based on statistical data regarding how users interact with your Shopify store? If so, we can help you implement A/B testing to gather data to help inform you of the best choice between two or more design layouts.

Create 301 Redirects

Are you launching a new Shopify store or removing pages from your Shopify website? You should create 301 redirects! We've seen ecommerce businesses lose huge amounts of organic traffic due to widespread 404 errors. We can help you create 301 redirects directly within Shopify.

Provide Shopify Training

Do you need help learning how to make changes to your Shopify website? If your site was developed in Shopify, we'll be happy to help!

Questions to Ask Shopify Site Maintenance Companies

Before signing up for a Shopify support package, it is important to ask the Shopify web maintenance company some questions about how their services work. This will help you get a better idea of the relationship you will have with the Shopify support team before you give them money and provide them Shopify access for one of their website maintenance packages. Let's go over some simple questions to ask:

  • How do you handle Shopify website security?
  • What is the turnaround time for Shopify support requests?
  • Do you outsource your Shopify site maintenance services?
  • What are your Shopify site maintenance costs?
  • Do you have minimum deductions or minimum billable expenses for Shopify website changes?
  • What are your normal hours of operation?
  • Will you keep me informed about new changes within Shopify?

We find it beneficial to run these questions by any Shopify development company before subscribing to their website maintenance packages, since it will provide much better understanding for you regarding the future relationship, the security of your website, and the expected turnaround time for important maintenance requests.

Shopify Website Maintenance Plans and Tips

We are often asked for a Shopify site maintenance plan by larger companies looking to establish routines and procedures within their IT department. We are happy to help you develop a Shopify web maintenance plan to ensure all aspects of your ecommerce platform, SSL certificate, and domain name are routinely checked to ensure optimum performance and uptime.

Here are a list of annual Shopify web maintenance tasks to review:

  • Check if your Shopify apps are still current, or if there are better alternatives to consider switching to for improved functionality.
  • Attempt to restore a theme backup to ensure the design files being stored is sufficient for full recovery of the layout.
  • Look at competitor ecommerce websites to see if you are missing out on new Shopify functionality for your own customers.
  • Perform a full security review of your Shopify store to ensure nothing has been compromised or left vulnerable.
  • Verify structured data, open graph, and social links are all working properly.
  • Verify the necessity of any 3rd party tracking, live chat, or heat map scripts that are installed.
  • Shut down any unnecessary Shopify development or staging websites.

Here are a list of semi-annual Shopify site maintenance tasks to review:

  • Ensure you have access to your domain name and that it isn't expiring soon. This will be helpful when you have to process a domain name renewal.
  • Ensure you have access to your DNS in case you need to change anything.
  • Check if your SSL certificate, if not provided by Shopify support, will be expiring in the near future.
  • Verify your Shopify theme backup schedule is working properly.
  • Check if you have an automated image optimization service running.
  • Check if the Shopify storefront is throwing any console errors.
  • Review your product and store configuration settings for anything that needs to be updated.

Here are a list of monthly Shopify site maintenance tasks to review:

  • Check for broken links on your Shopify website, which negatively impact user experience and SEO.
  • Check for Shopify website performance issues from recent updates or changes on the website.
  • Check Google Search Console for any coverage issues.
  • Provide some kind of update to your content to keep your online storefront fresh.

The Cost of Shopify Site Maintenance Service

The starting price for our Shopify maintenance services is $119.50/hour, but we offer discounts for pre-purchased blocks of time that bring the rate as low as $99.95/hour.

To get started, if you are new to our Shopify maintenance company, we'll need you to pre-purchase a block of time which includes a discount on our hourly rate. If you are an existing Shopify client, you are welcome to choose monthly billing at our higher hourly rate or continue to pre-purchase time and receive discounted hourly rates for your Shopify services.

If you pre-purchase a block of time for your Shopify maintenance, you will be happy to know there are no contracts, there are no hidden fees, the time never expires, and there are no minimum deductions for small Shopify change or support requests. Please keep in mind we rarely see tasks take less than 10 minutes, since the process of reviewing an email or taking a phone call, checking on whatever was asked, providing some form of feedback, and then logging the task usually takes at least 10 minutes of time. To keep you informed of the time usage on your pre-purchased block of Shopify support & maintenance time, you will receive a monthly email update letting you know how much time remains on your account.

What is Considered Billable Time?

When talking with prospective Shopify maintenance clients, we are often asked what is considered billable time. You will find the answers to vary greatly within the Shopify premium support industry. In some situations, you may find a Shopify maintenance company to charge a much higher hourly rate, but not bill out for communication and organization. Likewise, there are Shopify support companies like us, who charge a more affordable hourly rate, but also bill out for most communication and organization. To help provide clarification, let's go over some examples of what we consider billable time when it comes to maintaining and supporting your Shopify storefront.

Here are examples of what is considered billable time:

  • Reading through lengthy emails to understand what is being requested.
  • Preparing responses to lengthy or complex email messages.
  • Helping you figure out your domain name or web hosting provider.
  • Scheduling your website maintenance to be completed by the best team member.
  • Talking with you on the phone about ideas or tasks you want to discuss.
  • Reviewing completed work for quality control purposes.
  • Providing you training on how to handle administrative tasks.
  • Researching unique solutions to difficult questions you present our team.
  • Providing more detailed time usage reports, beyond the automated monthly update email.
  • Helping you figure out email client issues within Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, etc.
  • Almost any other task not specifically mentioned in the list below.

Here are examples of what is not considered billable time:

  • Talking with you about personal matters, such as the weather, a recent vacation, or a sporting event.
  • Responding to simple email messages that don't require research or lengthy feedback.
  • Handling accounting-related tasks, such as invoice generation, payment confirmations, etc.
